Just as an update, here is an excerpt from /var/log/messages of the last login attempt: I appreciate any help or input anyone can offer!! I am still learning all the nuances of linux, so I am not sure what log information would help most, but if someone is willing to look them, just let me know what information would help best. Renamed hosts.allow and ny files, then ran "touch" on both files to recreate Added "ALL : ALL : allow" to hosts.allow (changed back after it was unsuccessful) Checked the hosts.allow and ny files - both empty Reinstalled the openssh-server (yum install openssh-server) Verified that port 22 is open in the firewall, and the sshd service is running Restarted the sshd service multiple times (after every change to the ssh files) Reverted change in sshd_config back to PermitRootLogin no (this list may not be in the order i tried these things - been a long day with a lot of commands) I did extensive searches on Google, and have tried to fix the issue by doing the following: (I realize that alot of these changes have made my server very in-secure, but they have been done as part troubleshooting, and will be undone when the problem is resolved.) I can still connect to the GNOME desktop via VNC, but neither SFTP or SSH session requests will stay connected for more than 4-5 seconds. It also happens whether I type in a username or not. This happens about 4 seconds after the connection is established. I can initialize the session, the client connects, allows entry for username, but then disconnects with a "Server unexpectedly closed network connection". Shortly after installing the app, I noticed that none of my remote SSH or FTP sessions would connect. Then switch to display :2 (Ctrl+alt+win+F2/F3) and then run something like: startWayland So that I have a seconday desktop with gnome running with wayland. Is there an way to start Gnome with wayland through some command I would like to be able to run Gnome/X on my main display. This allowed me to direct connect my SSH as root and install the application. You can start Gnome with X through startx command. When the server was built, I disabled root login from SSH, but today I had to test install an application for work (Ricoh ProcessDirector 3.2), and re-enabled the root login via the sshd_config file PermitRootLogin yes. The server has been running flawlessly for the past year, but just today, I started experiencing a problem establishing an SSH connection through putty from any other PC on my internal network. Sunfire x2100 AMD64 Dual Core 64bit hardware platform ![]() I have a recent issue I'm hoping someone can help me with - I have a linux server with following specs: You will need to setup both VNC server & client.I am new to posting to this forum, so right off the bat I apologize if my post is lacking. Unfortunately I have no experience with VNC on Ubuntu (other platforms only) but the guide at should help. This allows you to view the actual desktop like if you were sitting in front of the remote server. The downside of this method is high network load of the transferred graphics, so it is practically usable only when both computers reside on the same fast LAN (for example company or university network). X forwarding must be enabled on the remote server. To enable this, run SSH command with the -X option and then launch a GUI application using the SSH terminal. So you won’t see the desktop of the remote machine but run individual remote GUI apps independently – with the ability to move their windows around your desktop, minimize individually etc. This allows you to run single applications on the remote server using terminal, like if they were running on your local machine. Regarding the question “server or desktop”, you should look at “ How to check if ubuntu desktop or server is installed?”. There are basically two options: SSH with X forwarding and VNC.
